Disconnecting And Removing Vehicle Batteries

When disconnecting and cleaning or removing a battery from a vehicle do the following:

  • Wear the appropriate PPE whenever handling a vehicle battery,
  • Isolate the battery by turning off the ignition switch and any other open switch,
  • Disconnect the -negative terminal of the battery first,
  • Disconnect the +positive terminal second but use caution to prevent metal tools from contacting any metal component of the vehicle,
  • DO NOT place metal tools on or near the battery,
  • Use a battery lifting strap to prevent injuries when removing the battery,
  • If the battery appears cracked or swollen remove and replace with a new battery,
  • If cables are corroded beyond the connectors it is advised to replace with new cables,
  • Clean the corroded battery and cable ends with an old toothbrush or a brass brush using a slurry comprised of a tablespoon of household baking soda mixed with a small glass of water,
  • Once the battery is clean rinse with clean water and let dry, the remaining residue once neutralized can be wiped off with a damp rag,
  • Reconnect the +positive terminal first followed by the -negative terminal.
